The Child Maintenance Service can assess maintenance but a fee is payable and many parents prefer to work it out for themselves and use the Child Support Regulations just or guidance, particularly if they share other expenses.

The current regulations are based on gross income; the only deduction being pension contributions. Maintenance is reduced by 1/7th for every night of the week the child spends with the paying parent averaged out over the year. It is also reduced if the payer has children that they are responsible for in their household.

The calculations are based on weekly income and the table shows figures payable for incomes from £20,800.00 per year to £52,000.00.
