WiRE Members asked to contribute to United Nations - Engaging with Rural Women Event - 20/10/11

“Strengthening Women’s Voices in Government”

Engaging with Rural Women in preparation for the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) 56th Session

The preparatory meeting ahead of the 56th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) focussed on engaging with rural women. The event was opened by the Minister for Equalities Lynne Featherstone MP and featured presentations on Government’s policy on this important issue. The event was intended to stimulate dialogue between rural women and Government as part of the strengthening women’s engagement exercise which Ministers recently consulted on. The outcome of the event will also help shape and inform the UK Government’s preparations for participation at CSW 2012 in New York.

As a result we have been asked by the Rural Unit at DEFRA for policy input to their UK contribution to the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). They have asked for feedback about any particular activity/initiatives undertaken by business women in rural areas (network perhaps?) that you are aware of and would like to tell about it.We have a deadline within the next two weeks so anything you have to say (good or bad) would be much appreciated.
