StartUp Britain aims to inspire “business-led recovery”

David CameronBusiness-owners are the best people to help other business-owners – that was the message from Prime Minister David Cameron at the launch of a new campaign to support Britain’s start-ups.

Modelled on a similar initiative launched in early March in the United States, StartUp Britain is the brainchild of eight UK entrepreneurs supported by Government and well-known brands.

The campaign is focused on a website described as a “Groupon for entrepreneurs” that links to online resources recommended by the founders and carries a variety of corporate offers for small firms. StartUp Britain will also be used to campaign for enterprise education throughout the UK, and is setting up a business-to-business mentoring scheme.

The launch was supported by high-profile figures from Government and enterprise, including the Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Business Secretary and Dragons’ Den investors Peter Jones and Duncan Bannatyne.

“The recovery we need is going to be a private-sector led recovery,” said Mr Cameron. “We need to set business free to drive our economy forward, not burden our business with taxes and hold our economy back. We’ve got to get behind the start-ups, the new and the young and the businesses that haven’t even been born yet.”
