WiRE – KEEPING YOU UP TO DATE

Do you know someone that has beaten the odds and started their own business?

The Barclays Trading Places Awards seeks individuals with an inspiring story to tell, whose grit and determination has turned tragedy into triumph. People who might have started working for themselves as a means of beating long-term unemployment or a life on benefits. We also want to hear from people who were already running a business when they experienced an event that changed their life in an instant. For example, a serious illness or personal tragedy that could have had the power to ruin their business dreams.

The closing date for entries is 16 July 2010. More details on how to enter and all the terms and conditions can be found at; www.barclays.co.uk/tradingplaces Alternatively, telephone the Awards Office on; 020 8673 2020 during weekday business hours.

Why you must network face-to-face!

Social networking brings many business benefits but there is still great value in having personal contact with potential customers and clients, says Mark Dixon chief executive, Regus. In case you haven't noticed, the latest business buzzwords are social networking. Small and medium-sized businesses are writing 140-word Tweets and logging on to discussions on forums like LinkedIn every day. A recent survey suggests one in four small firms in the UK is using social media to connect with clients. But in the rush to get on the social media bandwagon, are we neglecting the importance of face-to-face contact? You can start a relationship online very successfully but if you want your business to succeed, sooner or later you'll need to meet the people you would like to turn into clients (or staff), and they will want to get together with you. So much of communication depends on facial reactions that meeting people is essential to gauging character. Face-to-face contact helps to build trust. If you meet someone as a direct result of viral marketing in Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn be sure your personal brand online matches the reality. To read more visit:  http://tiny.cc/flmyx

Small firms- NOT going green.

Small companies are not investing in green practices as the difficult economic environment means that their priorities are to continue trading, according to data released by GE Capital. Just 9% of small businesses say they are putting significant investment into environmentally-friendly practices, while 37% admit they are doing little or nothing to make their workplaces greener, up from 30% in 2007.
“There is no doubt that the recession has had a major impact on SME's attitudes and strategies towards green investments.” To read more visit:

Government's rural watchdog – the Commission for Rural Communities – is to be axed.

Those who heard Dr Stuart Burgess speak so passionately at the WiRE Conference will be sad to hear that the role of Rural Advocate and the Commission for Rural Communities has been axed and will be absorbed into a Rural Communities Policy Unit within Defra. The commission would be abolished as part the government’s review of Defra’s arms length bodies, said rural affairs secretary Caroline Spelman. The delivery of public services by Defra would be shaken up to line up with the coalition Government’s commitments on service delivery, she added. Our thanks to him and  staff at the CRC for their support for WiRE. Dogs Trust National Photographic Competition- Staffordshire

The national photographic competition organised by The Dogs Trust was reported in the canine press, but few readers would have been aware of the success for a numerically small breed the Australian Terrier, within one of the competition categories. Not only that, but the dog in question was the first Australian Terrier owned by Janie Hugnall of Stafford. As Janie was unable to take Pangyau to the photo shoot at Dogs Trust HQ in Warwickshire, I accompanied him to the event, where the photographer Dan Burn Forti did an excellent job of putting everyone at their ease and getting some superb pictures of Pangyau, who relished the occasion, and certainly could not be called camera shy. www.haveahappyhound.co.uk
