About the Company / Business
I’ve always enjoyed baking and decorating cakes and in 1995 started my own business in Tadcaster, a small town half way between Leeds and York. I worked from home with the encouragement of my family (we had just had a wedding in the family and I made the cake). After taking a stall in Tadcaster’s local market for two years selling small cakes and cake decorating supplies I took space in a gift shop for a couple of years before leasing another in 2004. With someone else home baking I run ‘Celebrations, Cakes and Crafts’ and decorate cakes between customers. These can be traditional fruit cake or the increasingly popular sponge, chocolate or carrot. We try hard to realise our customers’ dream cake and special dietary needs. There is now a group of self-employed cake making associates who use the shop to showcase their products and who provide support in busy periods and holiday times. We now have extra staffing and seem popular with work experience students.
I have always wanted to support local crafts and with an emphasis on celebration we also share our window, shelf and floor space with jewellery, greetings cards and pictures.
There are exciting classes and workshops teaching people sugar-craft skills from covering a cake to creating beautiful flowers and fun models. Children’s workshops and classes are popular on Saturdays and holidays. Jewellery and card making classes also flourish. In addition much free advice is provided with the cake decorating supplies that pass over the counter
Most of our customers are drawn from North and West Yorkshire although enquiries from overseas have been received from people returning to the UK for their wedding.
Our charity support ranges from the annual Macmillan Coffee morning to selling commission free third world gift products.
