About the Company / Business

Francesca's initial encounter with gardens took place at the tender age of three when an early interest in entomology meant she ate a worm that she imaginatively believed to be the local garden bully.

Luckily it wasn't the usual trip to casualty, as the rather stunned worm was seen again at bathtime. But Francesca's firm passion for all things gardens was sealed and she was always to be found, when the car was finally packed, dog in the boot and sibings strapped in, at the bottom of the garden...

Marooned in a rural village of North Bucks which had a oneway daily bus,Francesca made full use of her environment. The property had sheds with unmentionable creepy crawlies, creaky floorboards and potion making stoves, there was an old pump that if you got unsuspecting guests to pump 100 times, some dank water appeared as they collapsed from heart failure.

It had an orchard with deep ditches to hide in and hedges that were laid every three years. The garden was a testament to 70's gardening, the two conifers growing at speed in the centre of a square lawn with a huge veg plot, fruit trees and shrubs galore. Not much else.

.Borrowed landscape included the site of the 1970's attempt to build Londons third runway, from which emanated the smell of chickens from the occupying battery chicken farm.

The veg patch had more Peter Rabbits than her father could physically keep up with his rifle, blasting the first one out of the hole early on a Sunday morning to annoy the neighbours.

School, was seriously not Francesca's cup of tea, a drink that has always featured in her life and will continue to be a constant companion in all her design work. Whether digging, wading around in a pond or up to no good, Francesca has always needs gallons of tea...

Finally, working within product development at Zoffany enabled Francesca to learn about design interpretation and on moving out from London to the countryside she started to apply these principles to her garden.

She then sensibly decided to get some qualifications in horticulture, studying at evening classes, taking exams, slowly moving her horticultural education on

Opening her own garden for the National Gardens Scheme was a great opportunity to gather feedback.

Starting WGD in 2004 one project at a time whilst ensuring the tea bags don't ever run out....

But it seems to be going well, the plants are growing, clients happy and she wouldn't swop it for the world....
